Pip continued his fruitful creative relationship with award winning country duo The Shires travelling with them to Spain to shoot images for their forthcoming second album ‘My Universe’.

Shires Shires

The Shires, Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes, are English, formed after Ben posted ‘there must be a country singer out there’ on Facebook and Crissie responded.  They have the distinction of being the first British act to be signed by Universal Music Group Nashville, the bastion of country music in the US.  They are now the most successful country act the UK has ever had – by a country mile. Their first album ‘Brave’ sold well around the world and they also gathered a shelf full of awards.

This is Pip’s second album shoot with The Shires, he shot the cover of the ‘Brave’ album in a London studio.  This time they shot on locations in and around Madrid harnessing the atmosphere and warm dusty light of the Spanish summer.  Art direction was by the very great Rob O’Connor at Stylorouge who will be overseeing the design of the project. The album, called ‘My Universe’, will be out in October.

‘In photography, bokeh (originally /ˈboʊkɛ/, /ˈboʊkeɪ/ BOH-kay — also sometimes pronounced as /ˈboʊkə/ BOH-kə, Japanese: [boke]) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light”.’

Pip spent some time at the end of 2015 in Cuba and here is a foretaste of the pictures from the trip.  When he has finished editing the whole trip Pip is planning to produce a book of his Cuban images and perhaps even an exhibition.

‘ I had always wanted to go to Cuba, it just fascinated me, a country in a state of suspended animation, a place I really wanted to photograph.  But it’s changing and now relations with the US are getting better it’s going to change even more.  I decided that if I didn’t go now it could be too late and the Cuba I wanted to see would have gone.  But it was amazing, still a very special place with incredible people.’

There will be updates on Pip’s Cuba project later in the year.

Shoot is really excited about Pip‘s latest directorial project, a truly outstanding commercial for The Scotsman newspaper which was released this week.

We love it because it brilliantly combines all the best elements of Pip’s work. Above are some still frames from the spot that are clearly and characteristically Pip.

He spent a week in Scotland and shot a hugely diverse series of portraits of real people from all over the country to celebrate modern Scotland and its inhabitants.  The voiceover consists of a poem, ‘Can You Hear It’, written by Billy Letford and performed by none other than the great scot himself, David Tennant.

In November 2014 Liam Arthur traveled to The West Bank to help pick olives and to photograph the people there who live their ordinary lives against an extraordinary back ground of sectarianism and strife.  The result is ‘Occupied – Portraits of The West Bank’ a gentle but powerful set of images that reveal the everyday life that lies behind the drama and the violence of the news feeds.  The pictures are moving because they capture moments of normalness, kids go to school and play football,  farmers pick olives and tend goats.  But it is all against the unseen but ever present background of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

‘Occupied – Portraits of The West Bank’ is currently featured on the photo mag website Of The Land and Us together with an article by Liam about his journey and how he created the project.

Pip recently travelled to the coast to shoot this rugged fashion story for Men’s Health November issue.  He says “we shot in an incredible coastal quarry location down in Dorset – a battle against the elements but well worth the trek!”

Scott Grummett recently spent a week at the idyllic Silver Island in Greece, a private island which runs a retreat for guests, teaching yoga and promoting relaxation.

At the insistence of many visitors, Silver Island are publishing a cook book of the vegetarian recipes served at the retreat, accompanied by Scott’s stunning images of food and life on the island.

Scott travelled to the island with his assistant Jack Fillery.

Shoot is proud to showcase Pip‘s epic images for Lawson‘s debut album – Chapman Square – on Polydor Records.

They were shot no further afield than Bedfordshire, but Pip’s sense of drama and gift for the cinematic manage to conjure up a mood and an exotic and mysterious sense of place hinting at Russian forests and Californian deserts.

The campaign, launched and rolling out across billboards, print and digital platforms throughout the UK is art directed by Studio Fury.

During the month of August, Pip set out to photograph a series of contrasting urban and natural landscapes. Shot in London throughout the Olympic games he describes his motivation behind the  project …

“Although I love portraiture, it’s always nice to break away and do something completely different once in a while. Despite the unprecedented crowds in our sprawling metropolis, these images are about human absence.”

Wonderland the magazine that is, which is showing the short film Pip made with BFL at the time of the release of his debut album ‘Last Smoke before the Snowstorm’  in July.   The film was shot in beautiful but rugged North Yorkshire with Ben roaming over the hills and the beach at Robin Hood’s Bay.  It features Ben’s thoughts and feelings about the place and reflects Pip and Ben’s shared passion for the county and the natural environment they both grew up in.

More images from Shoot’s recent trip to China.  The sheer size and scale of the city’s roads, as seen by the camera and by sat nav, and ‘old’ Beijing, timeless, well apart from the reggae.

Images from Shoot’s trip to Hong Kong and Beijing last week, ‘ part of a continuing series’.

The idea was to blog as we went but China was too exciting and there were just too many pictures to take, too many places and too many people to meet for that to happen.  It’s also taken a day or two to edit the 1000 or so images and here’s the first taste.  There’ll be more on the blog later as well as galleries on the Shoot and the Paul Rider web sites.
